Soakin’ Up Kentucky

Happy Thursday!

As many of you know, I’m living in Kentucky for the next year or so while I’m stationed here for work. Since I’m a born and raised Virginian, I want to soak in as much of this area as possible and take advantage of everything it has to offer. That being said, I’ve compiled a list of things that I would like to do and places that I would like to visit. I hope to share my experiences with you all and give suggestions based on what to do, what not to do, etc. As you can probably tell there are a few donut shops, hiking spots, many distilleries (I mean c’mon people… I’m in Kentucky!), and sports teams that I need to check out. PLEASE feel free to let me know if there are places that I should add to my list! This is just what I’ve come up with based on some research and suggestions from people that live in the area.

  • New Riff Distilling
  • Newport Aquarium
  • Jungle Jim’s (Eastgate and Fairfield): You all… If you’re in the Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati area you MUST visit Jungle Jim’s! Oh and if you decide to do so, make sure you have at least half a day blocked out because you will spend hours upon hours there. I mean, can you believe this honey section!? I think they pretty much have every single product from every ethnicity. It is so amazing. I will be going back (on the hunt for Hawaiian coconut syrup) many more times because I have yet to see the whole store and I probably won’t even accomplish that on my next visit.IMG_0918

  • Holtman’s Donuts: I only tried one donut because it was dinner time and they had only a few left but the outside was crispy, the inside was fluffy, and the apple filling was so yummy. Also, it really says something about their donuts considering it was “old” and still so, so good.Screen Shot 2016-08-10 at 7.38.09 PM
  • Miss Shirley’s Bakery: I have yet to try a donut, cake, or pastry that I didn’t like from Shirley’s! Although I will say, the cake icing was a little too sweet for my taste.IMG_3998

My name is Jordan and I’m a full time Food Scientist and a proud 2x Virginia Tech Alumna (GO HOKIES!). I love a hearty belly laugh, the feeling after completing a DIY project, anything sweet, and of course, a good sweat. Above all, I use running a marathon in every state as an excuse to explore the beautiful USA and try donut shops across the country. Welcome to the adventure and thanks for stopping by!
